So what’s a studio class??

Think of it like a big open group lesson. A technique used often in music conservatories, studio classes are gatherings where students perform for each other, receive positive and constructive feedback from our faculty and other students, and have the opportunity to meet and work with their fellow students.

Like a recital?

Not quite, the format and structure of a studio class is much more relaxed than a recital (which we will have later on!). It’s expected that the piece a student performs during studio class is a work in progress. Nothing is expected to be perfect, but it should be a piece the student has been working on for a bit.

Do I need to sign up or register for Studio Classes?

No, no need to register or sign-up. Studio Classes are open to all current Private Lesson students, and you can just arrive at the date & time for your age group.

What should I play?

Any piece you’re currently working on or even have learned in the past is fair game for Studio Class! For longer pieces, you could even just focus on a movement or smaller section.

Will everyone play?

Yes! All current LMS Private Lesson Students are expected to attend and present a work-in-progress at each Studio Class. If it’s your very first time to a Studio Class ever, and you’re feeling a bit stage-shy, please discuss with your instructor and you can participate as a listener at your first class to see how everything works. 🙂

What’s the purpose of a studio class?

There are many reasons we’ll be running regular studio classes:

  • Students get to meet and see other students! Often private lesson students are isolated during their lessons, and this is a great way to grow and nurture our music-making community at Little Mission Studio!
  • Students get to listen to live music! Listening and learning to evaluate musical performance are skills just as important as playing and reading music. And Studio Class incorporates all Little Mission Studio students across disciplines, so piano students can listen to vocalists, or guitarists can listen to violinists!
  • Students get to perform! The style of studio classes is relaxed and supportive, meaning students get to practice performing; again a skill important in learning music.
  • Shared knowledge results in better learning! Maybe you’ll hear a piece you’ve played before, and you’ll definitely learn something new about it.

So what’s the cost?

No additional cost! These regular studio classes are included in your regular lesson tuition!

Can parents or friends attend Studio Class?

No. Parents, family, or friends should not attend Studio Classes. There will be the time and occasion for you or your child to truly perform when we have recitals. Studio Classes are more about meeting and learning from fellow students without the added pressure of having to impress family or friends.

So save the dates and let your instructor know if you have any questions!
