Jonathan Smucker Voice Faculty
Tenor Jonathan Smucker brings many years of performance and teaching experience to the Little Mission Studio. He has sung more than forty roles in opera, oratorio, musical theater, and operetta, including leading roles by Mozart, Rossini, Handel, and Benjamin Britten. A familiar face on Bay Area stages, he frequently performs with West Edge Opera, Opera Parallèle, and Black Box Baroque, and has appeared as soloist with Festival Opera, West Bay Opera, Fresno Philharmonic, Santa Rosa Symphony, Pasadena Opera, Lamplighters Music Theatre, Mark Morris Dance Group, and Livermore Valley Opera, among others. In addition to his solo work, Jonathan is a member of the Philharmonia Baroque Chorale, and sings regularly with the American Bach Soloists Choir. An avid recitalist and chamber musician, he was a member of the Vinaccesi Ensemble, and has performed vocal chamber works on series including Old First Concerts, Noontime Concerts, and Music at Meyer.
An Ohio native, Jonathan began his musical studies at the Interlochen Arts Academy in Michigan, graduating as co-salutatorian. He has attended Northwestern University, and earned Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Postgraduate degrees at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, awarded for excellence in voice, opera, and Baroque performance by the latter. He received additional training at the Aspen Opera Theater Center, LA’s OperaWorks, American Conservatory Theater, and most recently, the Compleat Singer Programme at Early Music Vancouver.
A long-time member of the faculty at San Francisco Community Music Center, Jonathan maintains a private studio in San Francisco, and has taught voice at Skyline College. He accepts students of all ages and experience levels, and is fluent in a wide range of musical styles. His students have gone on to attend Ruth Asawa School of the Arts, University of Puget Sound, ACT’s Young Conservatory, San Francisco State University, and San Francisco Conservatory of Music.
