David Gonzales Guitar Faculty

David Gonzales discovered his musical ambitions in Albuquerque, New Mexico, playing in rock bands and classical guitar ensembles. Since 2009, he has resided in the Bay Area, where he shares his love of music as a soloist, chamber musician, and teacher.


David has received numerous accolades as a performer, winning first prize in the 2006 Society of American Musicians competition, and competing as semi-finalist in the 2013 CU Boulder Guitar Competition. He has been featured by the Chicago and Ventura County Classical Guitar Societies, and has been a visiting performing artist and teacher in Albuquerque, Denver, and California public schools. An avid proponent of new music, David has collaborated with many composers to expand the repertoire for his instrument. As co-founder of Ignition Duo, he has commissioned and premiered over a dozen pieces for electric guitar duo. In 2015, the duo recorded their debut album of new music composed for two electric guitars.


As an educator, David has worked extensively with guitar ensembles and private students for the past 8 years. He has worked as an intern at the Albuquerque Academy High School, a visiting teaching artist at the Denver School of the Arts, and a guitar teacher for the Music Matters Program, an organization that provides music education to underserved public schools in Solano County, CA.


David has studied and performed abroad at the Domaine Forget Music Festival in Quebec, as well as the Incontri Chitarristici in Gargano, Italy. He has appeared in master classes with many of world’s foremost guitarists, including Oscar Ghiglia, David Russel, Roland Dyens, Lorenzo Micheli, Matteo Mela, and Shin-ichi Fukuda. David holds a Master’s degree from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, where he studied with Sergio Assad. He also holds a Bachelor’s degree from Northwestern University, where he earned department honors in guitar and a second major art history.
