Robin Lacey Saxophone & Piano Faculty

Robin Lacey’s “beautiful and warm sound” on saxophone has been heard in venues across the U.S as a soloist and chamber musician, (NPR’s Live Sessions, 405 Shrader Series, National Music Festival, MD, Festival South, MS, Beethoven Center Concert Series, CA, 41st International Navy Band Saxophone Symposium, VA, Herbst Theater, SF, North American Saxophone Alliance, OR). She has performed solo and quartet concertos with several orchestras, such as the Redwood Symphony Orchestra , the Master Sinfonia Chamber Orchestra, the San Jose State University Orchestra and the Roberts Wesleyan College Orchestra.

Robin holds the chair for tenor saxophone in the Zelos Quartet. Recently the Zelos Quartet won the grand prize of the Beverly Hills Chamber Music Competition and the Frances Walton Competition in Seattle, gaining them a radio appearance later featured on NPR, and a week-long tour in the North-west region of the U.S. The Zelos Quartet frequently performs throughout the Bay area and United States, specializing in educational outreach concerts.

Robin’s love for teaching predates her love for saxophone as she first discovered her passion for teaching as a ski instructor in high school. Growing up in a musical household, she started learning piano at age 8 and often performed in recitals and talent shows in her school. Robin credits learning piano as the tool that helped her advance in learning many instruments later in life. She believes that all children are able and should learn piano as part of a well rounded education because it opens many doors for further musical development.

Later she earned her Bachelor’s Degree with Honors in instrumental Music Education at Roberts Wesleyan College, NY. There she specialized in saxophone while also continuing her piano studies. Robin not only excelled in teaching but also in performing, winning 1st place in the Roberts Wesleyan College concerto competition. After undergraduate studies, Robin relocated to California where she taught a full schedule of private piano and instrumental students, who perform tri-annual recitals for the elderly community in San Jose.

Robin continued to pursue both saxophone and music education at San Jose State University, earning a Master’s Degree in saxophone performance under the direction of Dr. Michael Hernandez. Robin has been teaching piano and saxophone in the Bay for the past six years and frequently coaches woodwind sections of school bands as well. As a Kindermusik certified teacher, Robin is passionate about teaching music to all ages!
