Little Mission Jazz Combos – Adult Class: Winter/Spring 2023

Little Mission Jazz Combos: Adult Class

Session:

Winter/Spring 2023

Description:

Little Mission Jazz Combos provide a well-rounded introduction to performing jazz in the traditional small group setting of 3-7 members. Students in this class will learn jazz standards and develop ensemble-based skills in arranging and improvisation. Build your music community and study music history with this semester’s Jazz Combo!

The class will be split into varying small jazz ensembles. Each class session you’ll work with a coach to learn the role of your instrument in a jazz combo setting. Your ensemble will focus on at least one piece to perform at the final class session for fellow students, family, and friends.

Safety Protocols:

In order to have safe and productive rehearsals, masks are required in accordance. Wind players should use a special winds mask like this. If you wish to rehearse without a mask, please take a rapid test within 4 hours of coming to the studio. Masks still required in all common areas and when not actively playing or singing.

Previous Experience:

Students should have basic knowledge of music theory and be comfortable reading lead sheets.

Instrumentation:

The ensemble is open to all wind, keyboard, percussion, guitar, and string instrumentalists.

Audition Requirements:

A brief placement audition is required to place you in an ensemble appropriate for your level. Upon enrolling, students should submit (via email) an audition video containing:

  • A brief introduction. (“Hi, I’m Bob & I play the saxophone! The pieces I will be playing are . . .”)
  • Two brief, contrasting, solo excerpts of your choice.
    • One excerpt should feature improvisation.
    • Excerpts should showcase ability in expression, articulation, dynamics, rhythm, and tuning.
    • Accompaniment is neither provided nor necessary for solo excerpts.
  • Total length of your audition video should not exceed 10 minutes in length.
      • Video taken on a phone or mobile device is completely fine – nothing fancy. 😉
  • Deadline for video submission: Wednesday, January 4th, 2023

*Students who have previously taken this class do not need to audition.
